Where we're heading next:

Home Sweet Home

Quote of the Day

Peanut, "Wow, mom, now we can say we've been to all 50 states! What are we gonna do next?"

Mountain Homestead Museum

Adjacent to the mine is a recreated Homestead with a very likable and knowledgeable tour guide, Miss Bethany. Every building is authentic although each has been relocated to their current location (taken apart and put back together like a jigsaw puzzle).

Apparently the Scotch-Irish settled the Appalachian Mountains for 2 reasons: the landscape reminded them of Scotland

and the lack of people. You had to be a hillbilly kind of person to do well here.

We learned the origins of Pop Goes the Weasel! A weasel is a contraption used to measure yarn. As the yarn goes around and around, the machine eventually makes a POP! sound which means you've wound a yard; each consecutive pop represents another yard of yarn.

The highlight was definitely getting to practice with real quills and walnut ink at the end. Peanut has been trying desperately to get a real quill and ink set as as souvenir on this trip, and I keep refusing her. This was the next best thing!

  1. interesting about pop goes the weasel. I would have never guessed. thought it had to do with punishing a liar or trader.
