Island Life

We stayed at Sea Escape Cottages, although we weren’t in one of the cute blue cottages. We were actually on top of a garage, but it reminded us all of the cabin on Lake Superior, and the kids immediately loved it. With an enormous grassy hill and steep stairs to the rocky shore below, there is much playing to be done!

The owner Les had left the light on in our place since we got in so late.

But after we were all settled, he knocked on our door to make sure we knew how to work the shower and other details about the place. Doodle, who has yet to meet a stranger, came out of the room to show him how she’d learned to skip.

The next morning, we were directed to
Giant Stairs, which must be the best place on the island for breakfast, and when we walked in the door an older woman (cut like a 16 year old) said, “Now, you must be the little one who just learned to skip!” It was then that I realized just how small Bailey Island really is!

A few minutes later Les showed up with his empty coffee mug and walked in to the cafe with a twinkle in his eye. Addressing us from the door he asked, “Now which one of you is Peanut and which one of you is Doodle? I know you must be Little Man.” Shockingly, this old fisherman guy from our cottage had read the blog last night! I was stunned and tickled silly all at the same time.

Everyone we've met since leaving Bar Harbor has been a real "Mainer". This is the best kind of traveling, going places where most people don't bother, and hanging with the locals.

Nothing beats rolling around with a big old dog, building a fire to roast marshmallows or blowing a conch shell at sunset.

Thanks, Les, for letting the kids stick to you like glue for an entire evening -- such a fantastic finale to our visit to Maine!
